The telegraph is one of the most important long-distance communication devices in history. This forerunner of the telephone kept the world in communication for a long time and was one of the contributors to the industrial development of mankind in the 19th century. The telegraph uses electrical energy and electromagnetism to send pulses from a transmitter to a receiver and maintain interactive communication between the two terminals. In this article, we will see how to make a homemade telegraph with a few materials and some time.
Materials to be used
- Two wooden slats for the telegraph base.
- Two batteries.
- Two small 1.5v bulbs with their respective sockets.
- Sufficient cable of conductive material.
- A copper foil.
- Four paper clips to hold paper.
- A cork.
To begin the assembly of our telegraphThe first thing we are going to do is to glue the batteries to the wooden strips until they are fixed. Then, on each of the wooden strips, we screw the sockets and glue the wires to the terminals.
Next, we take the copper foil and cut two long pieces and two short pieces. The short pieces are glued to one end of the wooden bases, making sure that they protrude from the wood. With the long pieces, we make a kind of lever and we place them on the wood, so that they coincide with the short pieces of copper that we have previously placed, it is like making a small and primitive copper switch. To finish, we cut a slice of cork and glue it on the free end of each of the long pieces of copper.
Once we have done this on the wooden bases, we are ready to do the wiring. The first thing we are going to do is to take one of the wires from the socket terminals and connect it to the base of the long piece of copper foil (which we have fixed with a paper clip). Then, we connect another wire from the base of the copper switch to one of the battery poles.
Next, we make a wire connection between the other pole of the battery and the small piece of copper, which we have also fixed with a paper clip. Repeat the procedure with the other telegraph and now we have the basic assembly done, all that remains is to connect the two devices by means of cable connections between the individual telegraph sockets.
The way telegraphs work is simple: by pressing our copper switch, we close the electrical circuit, which will make the light bulb turn on and emit an impulse that the receiver can see on his device.
