How to make a homemade smoke bomb

In many films, TV series, concerts, we have seen smoke bombs used as special effects. There is a simple chemistry experiment that will allow us to create our own smoke bomb, which we can use at a science fair or for fun at home.

Home-made smoke bomb

Materials

- Potassium nitrate.

- Impalpable sugar.

- Paper.

- A fuse.

 Creating our smoke bomb

It is important to keep in mind that this experiment must be done in an open place or outdoors to avoid any asphyxiation. Also, care must be taken with the eyes, which is why it is advisable to use safety glasses and, finally, to take the necessary precautions when working with fire. If it is a child who is doing the experiment, he/she must do it in the presence of an adult.

Sugar

The first step in creating our homemade smoke bomb is to take some potassium nitrate and place it in a mortar and pestle and grind the potassium nitrate to a fine powder.

Then, we take two tablespoons of potassium nitrate (which we have just ground), place them in a bowl and mix them with three tablespoons of icing sugar, until a well-integrated mixture is obtained.

Next, we place part of this mixture on a piece of paper and carefully place a wick, which can be homemade. Once this is done, we wrap the mixture as if it were a paper packet and we will have our homemade smoke bomb ready.

Coloured smoke bomb

It's time to light the fuse and watch the smoke come out in large quantities, as if it were a smokescreen like the ones you see in the movies.
