Fishing is a sport that many people have as a hobby or profession. One of the most consumed components in this type of sport are weights. Today we will show you how to to make a mould with which you can make as many leads as you like.
The manufacture of homemade weights is a fairly simple task if we have a good quality mould and we take the precautions necessary. The most important thing when working with molten lead is to be careful with the gases it gives off in its liquid state, as they are very toxic. For this reason, when working with lead it is important to work in the open air and with good protection. (gloves and mask).
For the elaboration of the mould we can use many materials, however in this article we will use gypsum as it withstands the heat quite well. In addition, so that the mould can be separated and the parts can be removed, it will be fitted with two-piece.
To manufacture the first piece We make a plasticine mould inside a container and we stick the original weights on it. We must also put some small sticks in the upper part where we will introduce the lead at the end.
Then pour a little oil over the plasticine to prevent the plaster from sticking and finally pour in the plaster. After an hour we remove everything from the container taking care not to break the plaster and remove the plasticine.
The next step will be to carry out the other piece of plaster. To do this we do the same steps as before but this time without plasticine, that is to say, we introduce the previous piece of plaster (with the weights nailed) in the container, and we pour oil and plaster over it. After 1 hour we will have the mould ready to be separated.
Once we have obtained the two pieces, we polish them a little bit and we drill the holes with a drill where we will pour the lead.
Once this is done, it is time to melt and introduce the lead into the mould. To do this, we will use a saucepan and heat it on a cooker for example. We must bear in mind that the melting point of lead is 327 degrees centigrade so we need to reach that temperature if we want to melt it.
Finally pour the lead into the mould and wait for it to solidify.. Now we only have to open the mould and polish the pieces obtained.
Below you will find a video of the whole process.
