How to save petrol

In these times of economic crisis any method of saving is good and especially when the price of petrol is getting higher and higher. Today we bring you some fuel-saving tips in your travels.

How to save petrol

First of all, it should be noted that the consumption of a vehicle is highly technology-dependent of it. It is not the same to use a petrol car from 10 years ago as it is to use a modern diesel car. More and more improvements are being developed to reduce fuel consumption, such as automatic transmissions that help us to save fuel by shifting gears at the right time. Therefore, if we are interested in a new car, it may be worth investing a little more in technology, as we will benefit from it later on.

In addition to the mechanical and technological issues, the individual vehicle use influences the consumption of fuel and the way people use their vehicles.. Some tips to improve consumption are:

- In cars with manual gearboxes, shift at the right time without letting the engine rev up too high. Normally a diesel engine should change gear between 2000 and 2500 rpm. In addition, when we reach the 5th gear (which is normally the last gear in today's vehicles) the engine will consume less if we keep the speed between 100-110 km/h.

Driving on motorways or dual carriageways is preferable to driving on other roads. These types of roads are usually much more well-maintained, straighter and more prepared. A normal car usually consumes about 4.5 litres per 100 km on highways and motorways and about 8 litres in the city. This difference is due to the continuous shifting of gears on city roads.

Tyres should be at the pressure recommended by the manufacturer.. If the tyre pressure is too low, the tyre will have more friction with the road and it will be more difficult for the tyre to move forward. It is also a good idea not to carry large objects on the roof rack and to close the windows to reduce air resistance.

Do not drive aggressively will reduce our fuel consumption. Acceleration and braking tend to consume a lot of fuel.

  1. Thanks for the advice, one question, if on a long flat road I accelerate up to 85 km/h and leave the gear in Neutral, am I really saving fuel, then to brake since it has accelerated up to 90 km/h I put it in 5th gear and then downshift to 4th until I reach 3rd, and from there I start to use the brake.

It is not advisable to downshift to save fuel, firstly because it is dangerous as the car goes out of control, secondly because if you do that the speed will decrease and you will have to accelerate again to pick up speed again with the loss of fuel that entails, the best option is to drive the car with a good engine revolutions, a constant acceleration always with high gears and as soon as you catch a downhill you release the accelerator and thus consumption at that time is zero.
